Dudel has a built-in rechargeable battery. This is charged directly via the USB interface on the back. Batteries can be replaced on request at cost price.

Please check the cable. The cable supplied is for charging and data transfer. Other cables should work, but there are USB-C cables that are only for charging and not for data transfer.

If the cable is not plugged in directly (for example via a USB hub), this can cause problems.

To connect, the number one key must be pressed and held while the volume button is pressed.

On the back, the green LED flashes quickly.

Any device with USB-A or USB-C should work as a power supply. Whether the port is on a computer or on a power supply does not matter. A USB-C plug must be used on the Dudel side. A complete charging process takes about five hours at 500 mA. It is possible to listen to music while charging.

Basically, both are media players for children. Dudel is characterised by a highly integrated design. Due to the built-in rechargeable battery, there is no need to change batteries and MP3 files can be uploaded directly via a USB cable.

Hörbert offers more options, especially in the newer versions, such as a headphone jack or recording functions.

Dudel is made in Switzerland and, thanks to its direct marketing approach, is cheaper than Hörbert.

The built-in hardware has the option of communicating via WiFi or Bluetooth, but this connection is not possible with the current software.

At the moment, it remains to be seen whether this function will be available in the future as a software update.

The storage capacity is 8 GB. At 128 KBPS, that would be more than 120 hours. In practice, you can upload any 8 albums or audio plays, which can then be played using the corresponding front buttons.

This is not possible directly. However, with various tools (e.g. https://spotifymate.com) it is possible to download MP3s from Spotify.

Problems can arise when using the iTunes export functions. In some cases, a large number of invisible files are written to the SD card, which can slow down playback. By displaying the hidden files in the Explorer or Finder, unnecessary files can be deleted. Alternatively, the factory settings can be restored using the SD template in the download area. Recoding the MP3s can also help (see: Dudel does not play my music).

It may help to recode the files before transferring them to the Dudel. The VLC player is available for free download. In the “Media” menu under “Convert”, music files can be added and then saved as MP3. The files then have only limited meta content and are often only half the size. An entire album can be encoded at once.

In the test, we achieved 18 hours of battery life at a medium volume.
